Sinn Fein Fails to Win a Seat

DUBLIN, Ireland — Sinn Fein, the legal political wing of the outlawed Irish Republican Army, didn’t win any seats in Ireland’s general election, failing in its first bid to enter the political mainstream, results showed today.
Charles Haughey’s Fianna Fail party won the election, ousting Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald, but failed to gain an outright parliamentary majority. Political analysts said Sinn Fein did poorly because the campaign was dominated by economic issues, not by Northern Ireland. They also said the party may have been hurt by bloody factional fighting involving an IRA offshoot.
