Chaminade Cuts It, Oh, So Close, in Victory Over Brentwood, 71-62

As a show of team unity, Chaminade High basketball players got modified versions of “the Boz” haircut last weekend in preparation for the Southern Section 1-A playoffs.
Tuesday in a wild-card game against Brentwood, the Chaminade players got another close shave.
But behind 35 points from Kevin Black and 20 from Scott Stuber, Chaminade prevailed over Brentwood, 71-62, to advance to Friday’s first-round playoff game against Paraclete in Lancaster.
Although Chaminade (17-7) took control of the game in the first quarter, Brentwood (12-11) hung tough to make the hosts work for the victory. Brentwood closed to 59-55 with 2:43 to play before Chaminade pulled away for good.
Black hit 16 of 22 shots, many from the perimeter, and had six rebounds. When Brentwood closed to within four points in the final three minutes, the 6-7 senior scored a layup and made two free throws to put Chaminade ahead, 63-55, with 2:08 to play.
Stuber, coming of a sub-par performance last Friday against Harvard, hit 7 of 10 shots and had nine rebounds and two steals.
Stuber and Black came up with the haircut idea.
“We just thought we needed a change, something fresh going into the playoffs,” Stuber said.
The striped look is OK with Chaminade Coach Mike Lynn.
“Whatever it takes to get them motivated for the playoffs,” Lynn said. “They’re going to have to take me to the finals at the Sports Arena before I get that kind of haircut.”
