Dana Kirk, former Memphis State basketball coach, paid his star player Keith Lee $14,600 in cash, U.S. Atty. Hickman Ewing Jr. said Friday in Memphis.
Kirk, 51, who was fired by the university in September, is charged by a federal grand jury with tax evasion, fraud and obstruction of justice. He has pleaded innocent and is scheduled for trial in May.
Ewing said he was talking about a $4,800 cash expenditure by Kirk in 1982 and one for $9,800 in 1983. Both of which went to Lee, he said.
Lee, who now plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has declined comment.
