McFarlane Leaves Hospital After His Attempt at Suicide

WASHINGTON — Former national security adviser Robert C. McFarlane has been released from Bethesda Naval Hospital where he was treated after attempting suicide with an overdose of Valium, a hospital spokesman said today.
McFarlane was rushed to the medical facility in suburban Maryland on Feb. 9, the day he was to be questioned by the Tower Commission investigating the Iran arms- contra aid scandal. Police said McFarlane, 49, had taken between 20 and 30 Valium pills.
A hospital spokesman said McFarlane was released Monday. During his hospitalization, members of the Tower Commission interviewed him twice.
