Patience is running thin, Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige said regarding the long-simmering dispute with Japan over semiconductor trade. “Strong action” might be needed to protect American computer chip makers, he warned. Speaking in Washington to the Semiconductor Industry Assn., Baldrige said that Japan does not appear to be living up to an agreement of last August, in which Japanese chip manufacturers vowed to stop undercutting U.S. prices and to grant greater access to their markets.
