A self-portrait by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens and several other art works were stolen from a West Berlin man’s private collection, police said Thursday. Police said the thief entered the owner’s apartment before dawn Wednesday by a second-floor balcony and took the painting, four icons and eight ivory figures. They did not estimate the value of the stolen works nor identify the owner of the collection, but said he surprised the thief when he returned to the apartment. The thief fled in a white automobile. No further details were available.
