COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Pierce Commits 6 Errors in 17-5 Bakersfield Win

Bakersfield College had 13 hits against six Pierce pitchers and took advantage of six errors to win a Western State Conference game, 17-5, on Friday at Pierce.
Bakersfield (3-10, 1-2 in conference) trailed, 3-2, after two innings, but broke the game open in the third when it sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs. Pierce (4-7, 1-2 in conference) used three pitchers in the inning.
Pierce, which had 12 hits, was led by Mike Rosenberg, who had a double and a triple. Paul Plyler added a double for Pierce. Will L’Heureux (0-1) suffered the loss.
SOFTBALL
Diane Nicholls hit a two-run home run in a three-run third inning to lead Pierce to a 4-1 victory over Ventura in a Western State Conference game. Pauline Madrid (5-7), formerly of Kennedy High, allowed two hits in a complete-game performance for Pierce. Michelle Wood went 3 for 4 for Pierce and teammate Lynn Hammond went 2 for 4.
SWIMMING
Brent Hermanson won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.3) and teammate Norm Skorge won the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.6) as Pierce defeated College of the Canyons, 82-20. . . In the women’s meet, Kim Reese won the 50-yard backstroke (31.3) as Pierce beat Canyons, 68-38. Stephanie Bardack, Cristine Koeser, Linda Drucker and Kim Reese of Pierce teamed to win the 200 relay (1:54.9).
MEN’S TENNIS
John Freeman, Alex Olaya, Robert Grundy and Dave Valastro won their singles matches to lead Pierce to a 7-2 win over Santa Monica in a Western State Conference match at Pierce.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Nicole Gillis and Allison Kincaid of Cal State Northridge won their singles matches, but the Lady Matadors lost to Cal State Bakersfield, 6-3, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match.
