L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:
SATURDAY
“The Violins Came With the Americans” (U.S.A., 1987, 3 p.m.). Mila Burnette plays a woman of Puerto Rican background who leaves an Anglo husband to rediscover her heritage in the Bronx tenement of her youth. A serious-minded endeavor that attempts to grapple with ethnic assimilation, Puerto Rican nationalism, minority activism and life after marriage. But neither first-time director Kevin Conway nor writer Burnette (credited as M. Quiros) manage to take full control of the drama in this heavily autobiographical story.
