L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:
FRIDAY
“To Mend the World” (Canada, 1987, 7:30 p.m.). Documentarian Harry Rasky utilizes Emil Fackenheim’s book on the art of the Holocaust created by concentration camp inmates as the jumping off point for his film. Fackenheim himself emerges as the most lucid observer, chronicler and theoretician of this dark era. However, the art, much of it reminiscent of Bosch, is only fitfully illuminating. In sharp contrast, its creators are eloguent and moving.
