No Pollard Backlash in U.S. Seen

JERUSALEM — American Jewish leader Morris B. Abram said Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir told him today no government leader knew about the Pollard spy ring and the Cabinet would not have permitted spying on America had it known.

Abram, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, said he felt deep concern about the Pollard case for Israel’s sake but did not expect a backlash in the United States against the American Jewish community. Jonathan Jay Pollard, a 32-year-old American Jew and former civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, was convicted in Washington of selling U.S. military secrets to Israel and was sentenced this month to life in prison.
