San Diego High School Baseball : Coronado Rallies to Upset 3-A Champion Santana

SAN DIEGO — Bill Pate’s sixth-inning single got past Santana High School’s left fielder and Johnny Johnson scored from first on the error to give Coronado a 9-8 victory over defending San Diego Section 3-A champion Santana Monday in the GMC tournament at Coronado.
Coronado, trailing 5-4 going into the fifth, scored four runs in the inning. Santana scored three runs in the sixth to tie the score, 8-8.
Pate was 3 for 4, including a solo home run in the fourth and three RBIs, to pace Coronado (4-1) .
Reliever Bobby Watson (1-1) pitched the final two innings for the victory.
The Sultans committed four errors.
In other tournament games:
Montgomery 2, Valhalla 1--Jesse Lopez pitched a one-hitter and struck out six for Montgomery (2-2) at home. Jacob Saaib’s single drove in Montgomery’s first run in the first inning. Valhalla (2-2) tied the score in the sixth on a double by Joe Crisci to drive in Johnny Ace. Valhalla pitcher Justin Post walked in the winning run in the sixth inning.
Mount Miguel 12, Marian 2--Eddie Cervantes was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases to lead Mount Miguel (3-1) at Marian. Mike Baker went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs for Mount Miguel. Marian is 1-3.
San Diego 18, Francis Parker 2--San Diego scored in every inning but the third at Francis Parker. Tony Farrell went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, including a triple and three runs scored to lead San Diego (4-0). David Rex went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and four runs scored for San Diego. Armondo Ramirez pitched a four-hitter and struck out four. The game was called after six innings because of darkness.
