Bill Would Give $100 Million for Accepting A-Dump

WASHINGTON — Sens. J. Bennett Johnston (D-La.) and James A. McClure (R-Ida.) introduced a bill today providing $100 million a year to the state or Indian tribe willing to accept the nation’s first high-level nuclear waste dump.
“There is a little carrot in this bill,” Johnston said in announcing the legislation.
The bill provides annual incentive payments of $100 million to the recipient of the permanent repository and $50 million for the temporary storage facility that will prepare waste for eventual burial.
Payments would come from the Nuclear Waste Fund, which is fed by the commercial nuclear industry, which generates waste from 100 plants.
The Energy Department is currently considering three sites in Washington state, Nevada and Texas for the dump.
