Norway Likely to Cut Its Aid to Sri Lanka

OSLO — Norway, a frequent donor to developing countries, said Wednesday that it is likely to reduce development aid to Sri Lanka after next year because of alleged human rights violations against the country’s minority Tamils.
“Norway will probably stop material contributions to Sri Lanka after next year but continue funding development projects,” Foreign Aid Minister Vesla Vetlesen told the Norwegian news agency NTB.
Norway allocated $9.5 million to Sri Lanka in its 1987 foreign aid budget. Of this, $1.4 million was spent on goods, mostly paper exports, requested by the Sri Lankan government.
