San Diego Given Chance at Sports Site

In a move that could bring a national multi-sport training center to San Diego County, United States Olympic Committee officials Saturday voted to postpone designating a site for a year until they heard San Diego’s proposal.

USOC member Anita DeFrantz of Los Angeles said she is aware of other Western cities that are interested in building training centers, but the USOC members, at their House of Delegates meetings here, decided to give San Diego officials a year to complete a study and submit a plan.

There are USOC-sanctioned training centers in Colorado Springs, Colo., Lake Placid, N.Y., and Marquette, Mich. San Diego’s would be the first in a warm climate.

A task force, chaired by San Diego Councilwoman Gloria McColl, has selected 60 acres belonging to UC San Diego as a possible site. The task force estimated that it would need between $20 million and $25 million to build the facility. McColl was unavailable for comment.
