Arcadia : City to Ban Fireworks

Over the objections of groups that raise money by selling fireworks, the City Council has voted unanimously to ban the sale and use of fireworks in the city, effective July 5.
Arcadia Fire Chief Jerry R. Gardner said that after this year, the only fireworks that will be allowed in the city will be those used in public displays.
The council decided to permit fireworks this year because members feared that many service clubs that raise funds by selling fireworks had already bought them for this year’s Independence Day celebration, Gardner said.
Gardner said Fire Department statistics showed that 118 fires, $370,000 in damage and an unestimated number of injuries had been caused by fireworks over the last 10 years.
Forty-one cities in Los Angeles County, including Duarte, Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Glendora, Monrovia, Pomona, South Pasadena, Los Angeles, Burbank and Glendale, have bans on fireworks, Gardner said.
