San Diego College Baseball : Hawaii Wins, Extends Lead Over Aztecs

The University of Hawaii defeated San Diego State, 3-1, Thursday night in Honolulu to extend its lead to four games over the Aztecs in the Western Division of the Western Athletic Conference.
The victory, in the opener of a four-game series, improved Hawaii’s record to 12-1 in conference and 32-16 overall. SDSU is 8-5, 27-21-1.
Larry Gonzales’ two-run single highlighted a third-inning rally for Hawaii.
Bob Parry’s sacrifice fly scored Anthony Johnson in the first inning for the Aztecs’ run.
Paul Brown (3-1 in conference) pitched the first eight innings for the Rainbows.
UC San Diego 9, Menlo College 2--Sophomore Rick Nowak struck out seven in his seven-hit, nonconference victory at Menlo Park. Nowak became the Tritons’ all-time leader with 133 strikeouts, two better than Bob Allen (131 strikeouts from 1979-82). Glen Turnipseed had three hits and two RBIs and Derek Alkonis had two hits and two RBIs to lead UCSD (22-11). Menlo is 15-15.
United States International University 16, Grand Canyon College 9--Kevin Robinson was 4 for 5, including two doubles and a two-run home run, to pace the Gulls in a nonconference victory at home. USIU, led by Ron Howard’s five steals, stole 10 bases. Ron Green and Larry Oedewaldt had three hits each and Bob Esquera had a two-run homer in the first to lead USIU (26-24-1). Grand Canyon College is 35-25.
