Chapman’s Nelson Is Player of Year

Darren Nelson, Chapman College outfielder, was unanimously selected player of the year Tuesday in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.
Nelson, 21, was the conference’s first triple crown winner, leading the league with a .388 average and school-record totals of 21 home runs and 77 RBIs. His 22 doubles tied the Chapman mark and also led the conference.
The Panthers also had three players chosen to the all-conference second team: Second baseman Mike Cruz, (.343 with 7 home runs and 43 RBIs); catcher Bucky Bollinger (.291, 4 home runs, 34 RBIs) and left-handed pitcher Steve Dunn (4-4, 4.53 earned-run average).
