Gasoline prices have gone up nearly five cents a gallon since the Memorial Day weekend last year and should keep rising, oil industry analysts said. The average price for a gallon of gas, combining all grades, was 96.6 cents in early May, according to a survey of more than 14,000 gasoline stations nationwide by Trilby Lundberg, head of an industry research firm. The 96.6-cents-a-gallon average is about four cents above the level at the start of last year’s summer driving season, which coincided with a startling plunge in crude oil prices that shook the world oil industry. However, the average remains far below the 1985 level of $1.21 a gallon.
