Boy Reported Kidnaped; Found Unharmed

A woman allegedly kidnaped a 2-year-old boy on a Paramount street Saturday while his father was inside a coin laundry washing clothes, but sheriff’s deputies found the boy unharmed hours later and arrested the woman, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Jairo Hernandez was waiting outside a laundry on Orange Avenue when Gloria Mae Silvera, a 28-year-old transient, picked him up and walked away, the spokesman said.

At first Jairo’s father thought the boy had strayed on his own, and called authorities to report him missing. But as sheriff’s deputies conducted interviews, they were told by witnesses that a woman had taken the boy.

A team of nine sheriff’s deputies, four detectives and six sheriff’s Explorer scouts began searching. About six hours after the kidnaping, shortly before nightfall, they found the boy and the woman in a Long Beach park.

Silvera was taken into custody without incident. She was booked on a charge of kidnaping and held in lieu of $6,000 bond.
