Mary Decker Slaney, the women’s world record-holder in the mile and the American record-holder at every distance from 800 meters to 10,000 meters, underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right Achilles’ tendon at a hospital in Eugene, Ore.
Pain in the tendon forced Slaney to withdraw from meets in Los Angeles and Eugene during the past 2 1/2 weeks. She hopes to recover in time to compete in the World Track and Field Championships, which start Aug. 29 in Rome.
