Canada House Rejects Fetus Protection Bill

OTTAWA — A motion to give fetuses constitutional protection was voted down in Canada’s House of Commons.
The vote Tuesday was 89-62 against a motion by Progressive Conservative member of Parliament Gus Mitges, who represents part of Ontario, to include the fetus or “unborn being” in the Section 7 Charter of Rights guarantee of “life, liberty and the security of the person.”
Member Pauline Jewitt told the Commons that the real intent of the motion was to end therapeutic abortions. Under present law, abortions are allowed if approved by a hospital committee on the grounds that the continued pregnancy would jeopardize the life or health of the mother.
