Jim Howard of College Station, Tex., broke the American outdoor high jump record in Rehlingen, West Germany with a jump of 7-8 3/4. Howard, who also holds the American indoor record at 7-8 3/4, was the previous outdoor record-holder at 7-8 1/2.
