A union representing 40,000 hairdressers urged the Food and Drug Administration to ban methylene chloride in aerosol hair sprays. “According to the FDA’s own estimates, one in every 100 hairdressers will develop cancer from continued use of aerosol hair sprays that contain methylene chloride,” said William H. Wynn, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. The union said the FDA proposed to ban the chemical months ago, but industry opposition delayed action.
