Give Handler Credit

In his June 3 column, “Britton May Unite Board, Teachers Union,” Harry Bernstein did not recount the extensive efforts that already have occurred in Los Angeles schools under Superintendent Harry Handler, board President Rita Walters and other board members and the school system’s staff to bring about cooperative management in the district.

Handler, in his television address last August, re-emphasized more collegial relationships and reminded the staff of his directive that a curriculum council should be formed at each school.

In December, he directed the staff to write a comprehensive statement on teacher participation in the decision-making processes. This document was shared with United Teachers-Los Angeles leadership.

Whatever power-sharing relationships that may be developed during the coming year, they will be built upon a foundation established by Handler and board members.
