The Iran-contra hearings will resume this week in a climate of widespread public skepticism about President Reagan’s candor. The latest Gallup Poll found that a two-thirds majority thinks the hearings, when concluded, will show Reagan to have been more involved than he thus far has stated. At the same time, those who believe the Iran-contra affair is not serious enough to affect Reagan’s ability to govern outnumber those having a contrary view by 53% to 42%. Public opinion on this issue has been remarkably consistent, the survey said, with at least a plurality siding with Reagan in all but one survey since December.
