About 50 people were evacuated from a five-square-block area of Vernon and seven persons were taken to hospitals with nausea and breathing problems after corrosive chemical fumes poured from a United Parcel Service truck. Vernon Fire Battalion Chief Dave Telford said the truck’s load of 17 hydrogen chloride cylinders bound for a steel supply company began to fume from leaking valves, prompting the closure of several businesses in the area near Slauson Avenue and Alameda Street. The truck driver and a firefighter were among those treated.
