A man who stopped to help a woman whose dog had been hit by a car was struck and killed himself, police said Saturday.
J. Ross Moore, 48, of Stanton was walking home from work shortly before midnight Friday when he saw the dog in the eastbound lane of Cerritos Avenue just west of Ramblewood Drive, said Police Sgt. Steven Kelch.
Moore picked up the dog and was carrying it to its owner when he was hit by a car, police said.
The driver said he saw the woman standing by the edge of the road crying and was slowing to help her when he heard a noise and realized he had struck someone.
Paramedics administered CPR, but Moore died about 30 minutes later. The driver was not cited. The name of the woman, whose dog died, was not released.
