Bonita’s Erb Shoots Record 69

SAN DIEGO — Christy Erb of Bonita shot a girls’ tournament-record 69 on the par-74 women’s course at Torrey Pines North Wednesday to move into third place in the girls’ age 15-17 division of the Optimist Junior World golf tournament.
The previous record was 70, set in 1984 by Joan Pitcock of Fresno.
Erb, who was the runner-up last year, shot 81 the first day to give her a 2-over-par 150. She was six strokes behind leader Brandie Burton of Rialto, Calif. Michelle McGann of Riviera Beach, Fla., was second at 146.
Manuel Zerman of Durbin, South Africa, who was tied for first after one round, shot a 3-under-par 69 on Torrey Pines South for the lead in the boys’ 15-17 division. Zerman led by five strokes with a 5-under-par 139. Zerman finished second in 1985 and third in 1984 and 1986.
First-round co-leader Kevin Kemp from Greensboro, N.C., shot 76 Wednesday to drop into a tie for sixth.
San Diego’s Phil Mickelson shot his second consecutive 72 and was tied for second with three others. Troy Barnes was tied for sixth at 146 and Patrick Patterson from Oceanside was in 10th at 147.
