Data General lost $65.1 million in the third quarter after taking a $53.8-million charge to restructure itself and slash costs. An ailing maker of a broad line of computer systems, the company said it would consolidate some of its manufacturing, field engineering and other facilities, close three major plants and lay off about 950 workers. The Westboro, Mass.-based firm added that the restructuring should reduce costs by about $100 million a year and make the company profitable next year.
