Rossmoor : Fire Started by Hot Iron Causes Heavy Damage
- Share via
A fire started by a hot iron destroyed the garage, roof and attic of a house in the 11600 block of Wembley Drive Thursday night, causing $150,000 damage, fire officials said Friday.
Firefighters estimated that they saved much of the rest of the structure, preventing $180,000 in additional losses.
Thirty firefighters took about 35 minutes to control the blaze, which also destroyed a 1969 Porsche and a 1987 Bronco wagon, county Fire Department spokeswoman Patti Range said.
Sharon A. Wiloughby, who lives at the house, had been ironing clothes in the garage, Range said.
A neighbor, who is an off-duty Torrance arson investigator, spotted the fire and attempted to extinguish the flames with a hose, Range said.
