U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL ROUNDUP : Camarillo’s Lloyd Ensures West’s Field Hockey Gold

Attacker Brant Lloyd of Camarillo and midfielder Billy Davidson each scored two goals as the West defeated the South, 6-2, to win the gold medal in men’s field hockey Friday night at the U.S. Olympic Festival in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Lloyd scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 16:33 mark of the first half to give the West a 3-0 lead. He added his second goal in the second half.
The South’s goals were scored by Tommy Hoang of Westlake Village and Brian Spencer of Canoga Park.
MEN’S TEAM HANDBALL
Jeff Fruin of Calabasas scored six goals to lead the West to a 17-9 victory over the North in Raleigh, N.C.
The West advanced to the gold medal game for the fourth straight time and will play the East on Sunday. The North will face the South for the bronze medal.
The South advanced behind seven goals from Eric Rodney of Columbus, Ga., in a 22-19 victory over the previously unbeaten East.
MEN’S FENCING
Spenser Thompson of Studio City won only three of 10 matches, but his North team won the gold medal in epee at Chapel Hill, N.C.
The North, South and East all had 2-1 records in round-robin competition, but the North claimed the gold medal based on 26 individual victories, compared to 25 for the East and 24 for the South.
Chris O’Loughlin of Van Nuys compiled a 5-7 record in matches for the South, which won the bronze medal.
