Vice President George Bush still holds a dominant lead in the race for the 1988 Republican presidential nomination, a Gallup poll found. With only six months remaining before the early primaries and caucuses, Bush has a 2-1 lead over Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, his closest rival, Gallup said. None of the other prospective GOP nominees have yet mounted a serious challenge. Bush is the preference of 40% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, to 18% for Dole. Runners-up include Rep. Jack Kemp of New York, 10%; former Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr., 7%; evangelist Pat Robertson, 5%; former Delaware Gov. Pierre S. (Pete) du Pont IV, 3%, and former Sen. Paul Laxalt of Nevada, 1%.
