Paolo Rosola of Italy outsprinted Davis Phinney of the United States and Andreas Kappes of West Germany to win the 40-mile Fisherman’s Wharf Criterium in San Francisco in the Coors Bicycle race.
Jeff Pierce of San Diego, maintained his overall 2-minute, 25-second race lead, finishing in a large group of riders eight seconds behind Rosola.
