Welfare

In answer to Ethel R. Wells’ letter (“Nuclear War,” July 28), it should be explained that the defense industry is a function of welfare. Without it, California would be a desert. Employment here would be nonexistent. A lot of retirees would be destitute since their pensions would stop. Now she is sure that “Star Wars” will never work. Good. This will be another welfare program.
One thing Wells has overlooked. President Reagan initiates programs and legislation, but it’s the Congress that passes and supplies money for these programs. If you are interested in making these programs stop, get Congress to stop financing them. Write your congressman and senators to stop the finances. Good Luck! You will need it.
