Chamber Urges Cutbacks

The Chamber of Commerce has sent a letter to the City Council urging a series of controversial cutbacks in city expenditures.
The council should freeze all employees’ salaries, close two fire stations and establish a two-tier benefit system so that new employees receive lower benefits than current employees, the chamber said in the letter, mailed last week.
In addition, the business group called on the council to lower the local utility tax from 11% to 9 1/2%
The council, which is facing a $846,000 deficit this year, discussed some of the proposals at Monday’s meeting but did not take action.
