Writers’ and comedians’ words are their life, so naturally they are concerned about censorship (“Comedian Carlin Has a Few Choice Words for Media Watchdogs,” by Steve Weinstein, Aug. 18). However, what culture would look on with respect, or tolerate for long as serious, a comedian who made it his life’s work to battle for filthiness on the air? This is a high calling.
As we used to say in school, and still have said about Eddie Murphy et al., those who continually use cussing to make their point do it only because they lack the necessary skills to use a more creative vocabulary.
I’m afraid that no one but George Carlin thinks his seven words are paving the way for the Solzhenitsyns of the world.
