PAGING SIDNEY FALCO: Pop Eye finds plenty of hot tips in the mailbox each week, but an enticing press release? Maybe it’s a lost art. One of the few experts is veteran publicist Lee Solters, whose efforts on the behalf of client Pee-wee Herman have earned him our Press Release of the Week Award. Here’s the release: (Note how Solters shrewdly managed to associate his client with a leading rock idol, who has absolutely nothing to do with Pee-wee, while also plugging all of his clients’ current projects.)
Look out Bruce Springsteen. Tune Pan Alley cats are predicting the new “Boss” to be none other than Pee-wee Herman. Pee-wee already has achieved superstardom status in television and the movies with “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” and “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.” Now with his single “Surfin’ Bird” from the “Back to the Beach” sound track making way (sic) up the charts--well, it seems to be only a matter of time before it’s “Boss” Pee-wee.
A final note on hyperbole: “Boss” Pee-wee’s single isn’t exactly rushing up the Billboard Hot 100. In fact, it hasn’t even made the charts yet. However, Pee-wee does have a record contract--Solters informs us Herman is signed to Warner Bros. Records.
