County : United Airlines Given Wayne Airport Access
- Share via
The Board of Supervisors Tuesday unanimously voted to allow United Airlines access to John Wayne Airport for the first time.
United will begin flying to and from Orange County, possibly connecting with Chicago, twice each day beginning next month, county officials said. Despite the addition of United, the total flights into John Wayne Airport will remain the same.
United will fill an opening created by the recent purchase of AirCal by American Airlines, both of which served John Wayne Airport. As part of the merger, Orange County officials ordered that American drop two of its previously alloted flights to make room for another airline.
The Federal Aviation Administration has asked that Orange County continue to allow nine airlines access to John Wayne Airport. United was chosen because it was at the top of a waiting list.
The other airlines at John Wayne Airport are America West, Delta, Jet America, Continental, PSA, Northwest and TWA.
