AIDS is not expected to infect San Francisco’s heterosexual population at the same epidemic rate that it has passed through the city’s homosexual and intravenous drug-user populations, experts say. Statistician Warren Winkelstein Jr. found in a study that the risk of a woman becoming infected through sex with an infected male partner is small--about 12 infections per 1,000 sexual contacts. He also found that heterosexual men had decreased their number of sexual partners.
