Heavy rains drenched parts of the Midwest as a flood-prone Iowa river threatened to spill out of its banks and a handful of nearby residents prepared for the worst and fled to higher ground. More than seven inches of rain were measured in southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa before the morning rush hour and many roads were flooded, authorities said. Water was up to the door handles of cars east of Lincoln, the weather service reported.
