Micro General Corp. in Irvine has won a $1-million contract from a Tampa, Fla., company to assemble more than 100 computerized, self-service package shipping centers for public use in Florida. The shipping centers will include Micro General’s electronic postage scales.
The contract is expected to be the first in a series that will provide for the assembly of 1,000 shipping centers in 33 states, including California, said George E. Snyder, chairman of Postmasters Inc., which awarded the contract.
The shipping centers are kiosks equipped with electronic scales, computers and video screens to display the shipping rates for customers’ packages under a variety of services, including same-day, overnight and ground delivery.
The machines will be installed in high-traffic areas, such as drugstores and grocery stores, in Florida by November and in other states by the end of 1988, Snyder said.
