A professional sea urchin diver drowned in about 30 feet of water off Portuguese Bend, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies reported. Steven Mark Katayama, 27, of Culver City, was pulled from the ocean by lifeguards after Gerald Beltran of Whittier, a companion on his boat, became worried and unsuccessfully tried to pull him to the surface. Beltran said Katayama broke loose from his gear and drifted out of sight.
