The Meadowlands sports complex is environmentally safe, and testing of the area will probably not turn up any links to cancer, the chairman of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority said.
Chairman Jon F. Hanson said at a news conference, however, that the sports authority plans to spend at least $50,000 to conduct environmental tests around the complex in an effort to allay fears that people are exposed to health hazards.
The safety of the complex, which was built on a landfill, has been under scrutiny since New York Giants tackle Karl Nelson became the fourth member of the team to become ill with cancer in the last 7 1/2 years.
