Even though he has signed several similar bills for other counties, Gov. George Deukmejian vetoed a measure that would allow Sacramento County voters to raise the sales tax by a penny for transportation needs. The veto had been urged by the Assembly Republican Caucus, which reportedly was concerned that the bill would permit the tax revenues to be spent for operating costs as well as construction of transportation projects. The Republican governor said he stood ready to sign a bill that would give all counties the power to have elections and let voters decide if they wanted to tax themselves for transit purposes. “Although I have allowed these bills to go into law in the past,” Deukmejian said in his veto message, “it has become apparent that a uniform approach to this issue is necessary in order to avoid unequal treatment among local jurisdictions.”
