LSU’s Williams Will Not Start Against Titans

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana State University’s leading rusher, Harvey Williams, broke an unspecified team rule and will not start Saturday when the sixth-ranked Tigers play Cal State Fullerton, Coach Mike Archer said.

“He has been demoted as a tailback for breaking one of our team rules. He will play, but he will not start,” Archer said Tuesday.

He would not say what Williams did to draw the punishment. “Our rules are strictly within our football team,” he said.

He did say, however, that it could be a one-game demotion.

Senior Sam Martin will start at tailback against Fullerton, Archer said.

Williams was not available for comment.

Martin said he expects that he and Williams will both have plenty of playing time every weekend, just as they did last season.

As a freshman last year, Williams opened the season running behind Martin at tailback, but later moved up to share starting duties.

Williams finished with 700 yards rushing last year and an average of 3.9 yards a carry. Martin finished with 556 yards and an average of 4.9 yards per attempt.

In the victory over Texas A&M; Saturday, Williams had 70 yards rushing on 15 attempts, and Martin had 26 yards on 7 carries.
