A federal judge handed down prison terms and a required reading list to former government securities dealers convicted of fraud in the dealings of Bevill, Bresler & Schulman Inc., a defunct New Jersey brokerage. The judge sentenced the five former executives of the firm to prison for terms ranging from three months to four years and ordered four of them to read and report on six books, including “The Longest Day” and “The Grapes of Wrath.” He said that he wanted to force the defendants to think about the concept of self-sacrifice and the plight of those less fortunate than themselves. The five were: Gilbert Schulman, 39, president; Robert Bevill, 44, chairman; John Rooney, 41, treasurer, and Stuart Gottlieb, 39, senior vice president.
