Connecticut Republican Newest House Member

WASHINGTON — Republican Christopher Shays of Connecticut was sworn into office Wednesday as the newest member of the House.
With his arrival, the political division of the 435-seat House became 258 Democrats and 177 Republicans. Shays, 41, a real estate broker, was elected on Aug. 18. He filled a vacancy caused by the May 7 death of Republican Rep. Stewart B. McKinney.
