Sports Briefs : 49ers Hope to Make It 3-0 Against Fullerton

The California State University, Long Beach, football team will try for its third straight victory at 7 p.m. Saturday against Cal State Fullerton at the Santa Ana Bowl. Behind the passing of junior quarterback Jeff Graham and a defense that ranks eighth in the nation, the 49ers have defeated Montana State, 51-15, and Weber State, 30-7. Fullerton, 0-2, has lost to Hawaii, 44-0, and to Louisiana State, 56-12.

CSULB Women Spikers Risk Unbeaten Record

The women’s volleyball team at Cal State Long Beach will take a 13-0 record into a match against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the university gym. The 49ers, ranked eighth in the nation, will also play host to UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. CSULB sophomore All-American Tara Cross leads Coach Brian Gimmillaro’s team with 212 kills. Cross was named Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. player of the week for leading the 49ers to nine victories and the title at last week’s Cal State Fullerton Invitational Tournament.

Walkin’ Willie Receives Cheer from Legislature

Bill (Walkin’ Willie) Croker of Hawaiian Gardens went to Sacramento last week to receive a copy of a resolution passed by the Legislature designating the third week in April as Cancer Awareness Week in California. The resolution had been introduced by Sen. Cecil Green (D-Norwalk). Croker, who said he received a standing ovation on the floor of the state Senate, walked from Hawaiian Gardens to Washington, D. C., this summer to promote cancer awareness.
