Scholar Charles Merrill Mount was indicted in Washington on charges of illegally possessing 17 Civil War letters that had been stolen from the National Archives. Mount, 59, was also charged with mail fraud in connection with alleged attempts to sell government historical documents. An FBI probe of Mount began last month after he was arrested in Boston on charges of trying to sell stolen letters signed by Abraham Lincoln.
