Connecticut City Hit by Underground Blasts

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Underground explosions that sent manhole covers flying into the air closed the downtown business area for nearly four hours Friday and knocked out power to several buildings, police said.
The explosions occurred in underground electrical power lines, and firefighters later flushed the conduits to rid the area of lingering fumes from burning cables, police said. No injuries were reported.
